TWITTER PROFESSOR NAMES MY TWITTER SITE AS ONE OF WESTCHESTER'S BEST!

Top 10 Twitter List For Westchester, NY
Aug 28th, 2009 by Chris S. Cornell.
Top 10 Lists are popping up all around us, and nowhere is this more true than on Twitter. I’ve always had reservations about the fairness of Top-10 lists, but have found them useful in plenty of situations. I was talking to a friend last week about strategies to employ in finding people to follow on Twitter. We agreed that a Top-10 list could be useful to those looking to get off to a good start on Twitter. We also agreed that there could never be one list that would serve everyone’s needs.

What I have done, after consulting with a few of my social-media expert friends, is compile a list that I believe is a good starting point for a Top-10 List of Westchester Twitter users. Many factors were considered, including the quality of the Tweets, frequency of Tweets, the number of followers and the number following, and the web address listed in the user’s profile. Also considered was the degree to which the site helped others and/or helped the user reach his own goals.

I expect to receive some feedback on this list, and I know there will be critics. I’m actually looking forward to it. I will read every comment with an open mind, and will take the comments into careful consideration as I update the list on a regular basis. I also intend to add categories, which will make this concept even more useful. Please suggest nominees for the following categories: Best Retail Twitter Users; Best Restaurant/Eatery Twitter Users; Best Non-Profit Twitter Users; Best Individual Twitter Users; Best Group (Geographical, Interest, etc.) Twitter account. With your help, these lists will be released in the next few weeks.

Without further ado, here it is - the First Top 10 Twitter List For Westchester, NY, in no particular order.

@MidWestchester - Chappaqua’s Walter Olson is a social media pioneer. He created MidWestchester to build a local Twitter community, and has done an excellent job finding and creating worthwhile content to Tweet. Olson also manages @WalterOlson on Twitter and writes the blog OverLawyered.com (often referred to as the oldest law blog).
@WestchesterMag – this is the account for Westchester Magazine. Creative Tweets linking to Westchester Magazine’s own content, plus quality interactions with their followers. Linked to the magazine’s impressive website.
@CDessi – An excellent mix of cutting edge social media information and other Tweets relevant to the events around us. Dessi’s Twitter account links to his always interesting Social Media blog, ChristopherDessi.com.
@LoHud - Nothing flashy. Everything Lohud. Lots of Tweets linking to the content produced by Lohud.com.
@ThisisRobThomas - This Briarcliff Manor resident is one of the country’s top songwriters and performers. He has also established himself as a darn good Tweeter. He encourages debate and comes off as genuine as any celebrity I’ve seen. He and his wife Marisol also created the SidewalkAngels Twitter account (see below).
@David Parmet - David accurately bills himself as a New York based PR and social media marketing guru who helps businesses and agencies navigate the seas of social media. A good one to follow if you’re looking to stay near the front edge of the social media wave.
@Martha Stewart – Martha’s bio says: Curious, inquisitive, experimental entrepreneur who cares about the world we live in. Oh, by the way, more than a million followers care about what Martha has to say.
@IndieBoundMeg - Meg Smith makes insightful Tweets about Indie Booksellers, and links her account to the IndieBound.org website. Good material for authors, publishers, booksellers and those interested in the industry. Makes you wonder why any bookstore or author would choose not to be on Twitter.
@WestchesterLife – The profile summary says it all. A modern and fresh two cents on the good, the bad, and the severely deficient of Westchester living. C’est la vie. My prediction: this account will take off if the Tweets keep coming. There is definitely an audience for this kind of no-punches-pulled content.
@ConsumerReports – Based in Yonkers, the well-known consumer advocate makes excellent use of Twitter, posting important (including recalls) and timely information along with a link to their website. Also check out the related ConsumersUnion and Consumerist accounts.
There. That wasn’t so difficult. TwitterProfessor’s first-ever top 10 list is on the board. Unfortunately, I know I inadvertently left some deserving Tweeter off the list. So to remedy any possible wrongs, I have two solutions: 1) I’m going to list 20 more deserving Twitter accounts below. These are all people or organizations producing good quality content on Twitter. I strongly encourage you to check their accounts. 2) As I mentioned above, I encourage you to contact me (using the comments form or contact page, or by calling me at 914-960-1533) if you have any information you’d like me to have as I update this list in the coming weeks.

The Best of the Rest:

@ExaminerStone – managed by Adam Stone, the publisher of The Examiner newspaper, a weekly covering local Westchester communities, including Pleasantville, Chappaqua and Mount Kisco. There is plenty of quality information being generated by The Examiner — can’t wait until more of it is posted online, so Stone will have the ability to provide followers with links.

@StationStops - StationStops focuses on those things related to traveling via the MTA. StationStops is currently engaged in a somewhat heated battle with the MTA which you can read about in this blog post.

@Small_Bites If you like food (and who doesn’t), this is a Twitter account that will make your mouth water. Linked with Liz Johnson’s Lohud.com blog, the Tweets include photos of food, recipes and news about food.

@AmyPaulin - The account of NYS Assemblywoman Amy R. Paulin. Legislative news from Albany and community happenings in the 88th district (Westchester, NY). Tweeting since mid-July, off to a good start. Keep it up.

@Everything Julie - The account of former LoHud.com staffer Julie Moran Alterio. Bio: Writer who explores the intersection of culture, commerce and technology. Also a mom with too many Cheerios in her carpet. Reformed night owl.

@EverythingLuLu - In their own words: The dress may take the cake, but the cake speaks for itself. This Scarsdale bakery is doing a great job promoting itself through Twitter and a top-notch website. Great images. Setting a great example in social media.

@ArtBizLaw - The account of Larry Berglas - Husband, Father, Writer and Lawyer, Lawyer and Writer, Professor, Guitar Player, Swimmer and Solving Problems with Pineapple Chords… Interesting and informative, entertaining and balanced.

@News12WC – Links (and lots of them) to content from News 12.

@Joe_Wallace - Pleasantville author who lets followers get an inside look at much of what goes on in the book-writing profession. Seems to be an excellent way for an author to promote his career. Very interesting Tweets.

@AndyBarovick - I am an atypical plaintiff’s medical malpractice/personal injury lawyer who loves time with family, music, biking and blogging.

@Blythedale - Blythedale Children’s Hospital is dedicated to the diagnosis, care and treatment of children with complex medical and rehabilitative needs. The hospital posts information and news, but also makes Tweets aimed at helping to keep all kids safe.

@PaulFeiner – Bio: Greenburgh Town Supervisor; former Westchester County Legislator, President Westchester-Putnam Town Supervisors, former national recipient Common Cause Award. Feiner has made a habit of listening to his constituents, and Twitter provides him with another effective medium.

@FlourandSun - Pleasantville’s cupcake bakery has set an excellent example for other businesses to follow. Great pictures of spectacular baked goods, consistent Tweets, creative use of the medium.

@RCAChap - Owner of Red Carpet Antiques, Vincent Fulgenzi Tweets about art and antiques, current events, and an impressive blend of culture and history. Particularly knowledgeable about NYC.

@Warner_Library – Nearly 1,000 followers. Useful Tweets for anyone interested in programs or services at the library. Good use of Twitter.

@HHValley – Bio: We create the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze and Legend Weekend. We preserve six museums of history, including Washington Irving’s Sunnyside and Kykuit.

@MarchofDimes – Daily pregnancy tips from Beverly Robertson, National Director, Pregnancy & Newborn Health Education Center at the March of Dimes.

@SignalPatterns – Twitter account of Ran Zilca, founder and CEO of Signal Patterns – a company that develops psychology-based mobile and web applications.

@WestchesterFam – This is the account of Westchester Family Magazine, and it sneaks into the list mostly on potential. This magazine should have no trouble putting out content, and it’s apparent they understand how Twitter is used. As of today, though, they’ve only made 16 Tweets. As they say, if you Tweet it, they will come.

@SidewalkAngels – a non-profit established by Marisol and Rob Thomas (@thisisrobthomas), works hand-in-hand with charities in and around America’s big cities.

@GetinLoop - Spirited Hyper-local news, focusing on Larchmont, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle and Rye.

You’ll find all of these accounts, plus many other good Westchester-relate accounts on the “following” list of @ContentHarvest. It’s easy to add them as accounts you follow by simply scrolling down that list and selecting the ones you want.

Editors Note – Chris Cornell’s wife, Connie Cornell is the manager of the @Blythedale account. Accounts managed by Chris Cornell, including @Pleasantville @ContentHarvest and @CornellGallery have been excluded from consideration at this time.

Some facts…

What is school bullying?
Bullying includes a wide variety of behaviors, but all involve a person or a group repeatedly trying to harm someone who is weaker or more vulnerable. It can involve direct attacks (such as hitting, threatening or intimidating, maliciously teasing and taunting, name-calling, making sexual remarks, and stealing or damaging belongings) or more subtle, indirect attacks (such as spreading rumors or encouraging others to reject or exclude someone).

How common is teen bullying?
Almost 30 percent of teens in the United States (or over 5.7 million) are estimated to be involved in school bullying as either a bully, a target of teen bullying, or both. In a recent national survey of students in grades 6 to 10, 13 percent reported bullying others, 11 percent reported being the target of school bullies, and another 6 percent said they bullied others and were bullied themselves.

Limited available data suggest that teen bullying is much more common among younger teens than older teens. As teens grow older, they are less likely to bully others and to be the targets of bullies.

School bullying occurs more frequently among boys than girls. Teenage boys are much more likely to bully others and to be the targets of bullies. While both boys and girls say others bully them by making fun of the way they look or talk, boys are more likely to report being hit, slapped, or pushed. Teenage girls are more often the targets of rumors and sexual comments. While teenage boys target both boys and girls, teenage girls most often bully other girls, using more subtle and indirect forms of aggression than boys. For example, instead of physically harming others, they are more likely to spread gossip or encourage others to reject or exclude another girl.

How does school bullying affect teens who are the targets of bullies?
Teen bullying can lead teenagers to feel tense, anxious, and afraid. It can affect their concentration in school, and can lead them to avoid school in some cases. If teen bullying continues for some time, it can begin to affect teens' self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. It also can increase their social isolation, leading them to become withdrawn and depressed, anxious and insecure. In extreme cases, bullying can be devastating for teens, with long-term consequences. Some teens feel compelled to take drastic measures, such as carrying weapons for protection or seeking violent revenge. Others, in desperation, even consider suicide. Researchers have found that years later, long after the bullying has stopped, adults who were bullied as teens have higher levels of depression and poorer self-esteem than other adults.

What are the long-term consequences of teen bullying behavior?
Teen bullying is often a warning sign that children and teens are heading for trouble and are at risk for serious violence. Teens (particularly boys) who bully are more likely to engage in other antisocial/delinquent behavior (e.g., vandalism, shoplifting, truancy, and drug use) into adulthood. They are four times more likely than nonbullies to be convicted of crimes by age 24, with 60 percent of bullies having at least one criminal conviction.

POLICE SUMMER YOUTH CAMP GRADUATION CEREMONY WAS HELD TODAY--LANZA FOUNDATION TO CONTINUE FUNDING ENTIRE PROGRAM IN 2010

I attended the 11 annual graduation ceremonies of the Greenburgh police summer youth camp this morning. Thanks to a generous grant from the Lanza Foundation of $65,000 the Greenburgh Police Department was able to continue this program in 2009. The Lanza Foundation recently decided to continue funding the program in 2010. 100% of the costs of the program were assumed by the Lanza Foundation. The camp ran for the past seven weeks.

This year 25 children graduated from the program. The children are between the ages of 12 and 17. The camp is, in essence, be a junior police academy where youngsters are placed in a setting similar to that experienced by a police recruit. The seven-week course consisted of physical training and classroom instruction in law and other related topics. Guest lecturers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, District Attorney’s Office, United States Secret Service and other areas within the Criminal Justice System presented an overview of their agency’s operation. Demonstrations by specialized police units and field trips to courts and other criminal justice institutions also took place. Contemporary issues such as alcohol and drug abuse swere addressed and students participated in various role-play scenarios, which illustrate the practical everyday problems faced by law enforcement officers. Campers received instruction and certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Water Rescue by police instructors.

The goal of this program is to expose your son or daughter to various law enforcement careers while developing academic ability and self-esteem. Campers come away from the program with meaningful skills and a better understanding of the criminal justice system and its potential as a career.

Sergeant Tim Carroll was the camp director & lead instructor. His enthusiasm and dedication to the program & children was evident during the graduation ceremonies. Police officer David Zenon also was an instructor this summer. The town is very lucky to have two very dedicated members of the police dept involved in this program.

Town Board members Sonja Brown, Diana Juettner, Kevin Morgan, Francis Sheehan and I are very appreciative to the Lanza Family Foundation for their sponsorship of this program.

MOBILE SHREDDER

Town Clerk, Judith A. Beville, has arranged for residents of the Town of Greenburgh (the Town entire – including the Villages) to safely destroy unwanted personal papers and documents! The Mobil Shredder, provided through the Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities – Recycling Office, will be at the Greenburgh Town Hall, 177 Hillside Avenue, Greenburgh, New York on Saturday, August 29, 2009 from 10:00AM to 2:00PM.

Each resident may bring a maximum of 4 file boxes, approximately 10” by 12” by 15” in size. All paper must be free of paper clips, bindings, folders and files. No bound or hardcover ledger books are allowed.
Shredding helps protect residents from identity theft as well as provides an opportunity to destroy unwanted personal papers and documents that contain personal identifying information. Residents should bring old documents and bills, pre-approved credit card applications, old credit card bills, receipts, bank statements, old tax returns or any other documents containing personal identifying information.

TOWN BOND RATING STAYS AT HIGHEST RATING POSSIBLE--AAA!

These are difficult economic times for municipalities around the nation. Many municipalities & businesses have seen their bond ratings reduced. I am very pleased to report that Standard & Poors has maintained the towns AAA bond rating. The bond rating was increased last year to the highest rating possible. Approximately 3% of all localities in the nation have this bond rating. The strong rating provides real benefits to taxpayers and reduces our borrowing costs.
The members of the Town Board (Sonja Brown, Diana Juettner, Kevin Morgan, Francis Sheehan) & I pledge to work hard to continue to run the town in the most fiscally prudent manner. We are currently working on the 2010 budget --and are looking for ways to reduce the costs of operating our government.

CSEA CONTRACT APPROVED

The Greenburgh Town Board ratified a contract with the CSEA at tonights Town Board meeting. Members of the CSEA approved the agreement last week. The CSEA members will receive a zero percent salary increase in 2009. The employees had been working without a contract since January 1, 2008.
The contract contains a 3% retroactive salary hike to 2008 (the CSEA workers had been working without a contract since January 1, 2008). Management had received a salary hike in 2008. It would have been unfair to grant management a 3% hike in 2008 and to deny CSEA employees the same benefit. Elected officials have not received any salary hike in 2008 and in 2009. Management received no salary increase in 2009.
TOWN HALL OPEN ONE ADDITIONAL DAY...In the past town employees had a vacation day on Lincoln's Birthday. Many residents were inconvenienced by that holiday and were surprised when Town Hall was closed. Effective January 1, 2010 Lincoln's Birthday will not be celebrated --government offices will be open. However, employees will receive one additional personal day which must be used within the same calendar year.

VIOLATIONS ISSUED AGAINST UNLICENSED CONTRACTORS...NEW IDEA: CHILDREN'S EXPRESS SHOULD OPEN UP BUREAU IN GREENBURGH

The Town of Greenburgh continues to aggressively pursue unlicensed residential contractors and unlicensed electricians and plumbers. Town Code Enforcement Officers have issued violations to over 70 unlicensed contractors in the past four weeks.

Westchester County regulations require electrical, plumbing and residential contractors to possess valid Westchester County licenses to perform work in the Town of Greenburgh. These licensing requirements are meant to ensure the safety of those residents and businesses by having competent contractors and tradespersons perform work. The Town is teaming with the Westchester County Department of Consumer Affairs and the Westchester County County Clerk’s Department to report those contractors found to be performing work without the requisite licensing for appropriate enforcement action.

CHILDREN'S EXPRESS IS THE KIND OF PROGRAM THAT COULD HELP GREENBURGH STUDENTS TRAIN FOR JOURNALISM---

Wouldn't it be fantastic if Children's Express would open up a bureau in Greenburgh? Could expose our youth to journalism and provide fantastic training.

Background

Children's Express was founded in 1975. Its worldwide headquarter is located in Washington, D.C., with additional bureaus in New York City, Indianapolis, Marquette, London and Newcastle. Children's Express is a nonprofit youth development and civic leadership organization that reaches out to youth across economic, academic, ethnic and cultural lines, and assists them in producing a monthly news service that provides their opinions and stories to news services around the world.

Program Operations

Children's Express maintains six bureaus, each of which works with a diverse group of approximately 125 young people. These young people work in teams to explore the issues that affect their lives. Using a method of oral journalism, they gather and record youth impressions, and communicate the unfiltered experiences and insights of children and young adults. Children's Express reporters range in age from eight to 13, and editors range from age 14 to 18. After exploring the issues important to them, the reporters and editors work together to write articles that will communicate these ideas. This copy is provided to newspapers around the world, including The New York Times News Service. Recent articles include "Bi-Racial Kids Live on Both Sides," and "Teenagers Talk About Racial Slurs." During the summer of 1995, Children's Express reporters and editors traveled the country to interview youth of diverse racial, social and ethnic backgrounds about citizenship, race and diversity in America. The result of this effort, Children's Express's Diversity Project, was launched at the beginning of the summer of 1998. This project is a multimedia initiative which includes television, print, radio and the Internet. Over the course of this project, Children's Express reporters will engage both adults and youth in an important national conversation about what it really means to be an American today, and how to fully embrace what they feel to be the country's essence -- diversity.

Outcomes and Significant Accomplishments

Children's Express was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1982, and received George Foster Peabody and Emmy Awards for coverage of the 1988 presidential campaign. In 1994, Children's Express was awarded the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism for "Homeless Teens Discuss Life on the Streets," broadcast on National Public Radio. Children's Express has published five books, including Voices from the Future: Children Speak Out about Violence in America. Children's Express participants have allowed thousands of young people to be heard on the issues of race through the outreach round tables they lead, and through their interviews.
