Dear Eddie Mae,

Given your poor showing, I guess that was definitely NOT GOD that you heard telling you to run! Could it possibly have been none other than Emperor Francis whispering in your ear using a different voice???????

Bernstein and Sheehan eat your hearts out.
WE WON BIG TIME ,does that tell you someting.

CONGRADULATIONS OVER AND OVER AGAIN,to what proved to be the best team running in this election.
This fight was a hard one but you all came out winners.
Now the next thing on the agenda, will be whether Sheehan and Juettner resign if not we will deal with them when the time comes.
Again a job well done not only by the candidates but also by the residents that came out to vote .
To the residents thank you, now we can see how the town should be run.
The Circus has come to an end .

Congratulations to the winners. I'm glad that there is new blood on the board. I know that Mr. Feiner is very popular, but I'd like to see some new blood in the supervisors office too. I've lived in Greenburgh all my life and I only remember ther being 2 differnt supervisors in all that time. I think there should be term limits. No one should hold any political office that long. Change is long over due.

I know there is another blog topic labeled operation clean sweep.

And I know that yesterday's victory is not akin to the "dawning of the age of aquarious".

However, I can't ignore the opportunity to register the appropriateness of the linking catch-phrase.

This November general election was truly a clean sweep for the Supervisor, for Sonja and Kevin and Judy -- and for the Town.

Unfortunately the broom handle can't be extended two years out; there are now, effectively, but two remaining pieces of litter on the right-of-way. Let's hope that they don't contribute further to any more accidents going forward.

I do want to register that God apparently was too busy in Mount Vernon to help Eddie Mae Barnes and that, of the opposition, only Steve Bass deserves praise for respecting his commitment to the Democratic Party. He and I have disagreed on most everything Greenburgh but in the end, he understands politics better than the local Party Chair, Suzanne Berger and is likely to emerge triumphant some day in another role. As for Messes Barnes and Williams, they aren't Party people, they were only in it for the money, "nice work if you can get it..." and the looming pension eligibility. That they were twice surprised is (not to take anything away from their opponents) a tribute to the uncanny ability of Greenburgh voters to cut through the bs and recognize that the two of them were coasting with full pay for the past 16 and 14 years.

Next up: the 2008 Budget, perhaps it is time to set the house in order and take a really hard look at what is essential and what is acceptable and, what is right for now and what can be put off for tomorrow. A little belt-tightening this coming year is in order and there are some over-staffed departments which should be trimmed and some under-staffed departments which need more staff. Hopefully this will come out in the month ahead but if this is to be a new beginning, then let's start off together with the same goal in mind: to run the town both effectively and efficiently.

Think of Town services as a large menu. You can order anything on it but when the bill comes, you must be willing and able to pay for the items you selected and consumed.

However that, by itself, is not a fair representation. The Town is composed of tablecloth restaurants, McDonald's, Starbucks, diners, the Hartsdale Cheesery and bodegas. Not everyone can afford the tablecloth and not everyone will desire takeout from the bodega. Everyone needs milk, bread and eggs (and there are those who have trouble affording these) but not everyone can afford filet mignon or
nova.

In the budget, the Town must provide the essentials for all residents; it tries to serve up filet, where it can, but often is forced to deliver chuck. This is social responsibility theory in practice and acknowledges those with lower or fixed incomes. The problem comes when some residents feel that they are paying high taxes, expecting filet, and getting only chuck in return. Or they are willing to pay for filet and demand filet in their compact with the Town.

You see, it IS complicated. And when you take into consideration that the Town is made up of non-homogenous, disimilar demographics, differing school, sewer, water and fire districts, incorporated and unincorporated divisions...all of which want the town government to think of their needs first...the scope of the problem starts to unfold. The Town Supervisor, indeed the Town Board, cannot make all the people happy all the time and nowhere does this become more apparent than at budget time.

This year, let's start the show off with a little more tolerance of ALL the needs that have to served. And maybe, some people will no longer may be able to afford Greenburgh while maybe some people are too affluent to remain.
There, it's been said. Live with it. There are no run-of-the play contracts between a resident and the Town. Things change.

Take away not that, the message is "too bad for you" but that as long as we maintain the fiction that government can make everyone happy all the time, the longer we will be chasing rainbows instead of dealing with the real problems that persist even on sunny days.

I believe that the new Town Board will recognize and deal with the onslaught of problems that have been percolating. Some of the older problems have already boiled over and been mopped up. Let's get over them and go forward. Others need the direction of the Courts and remain on "simmer" until they are resolved. This still leaves a mess of vittles on the plate for "civic leaders" and humble residents to chew on.

But let the first step be one of reigning in the upward spiral of unchecked spending. No one, rich or poor, can afford to let this get out of hand. We need to spend money today on what will yield a return today not tomorrow. We can't afford to invest for a fuzzy benefit in a distant tomorrow.

Otherwise we'll be back to the menu and ordering everything in columns A and B.
Even though we live in a Democracy, we can still enjoy this without maintaining the vomitoriums of ancient Greece.

Amazing, for a guy who suppoted Greenawalt last time around and was still on the fence as of last spring, Samis has not only jumped on Feiner's bandwagon but has seized the reins. Is he a front-running Red Sox fan too?

Anonymous said...

You could say what you want about Samis but you must remember he was the only one who put all the cards on the table concerning the library, the ethics board and above all Dromore rd. just to name a few topics.
He has been a true friend to many of the residents of Greenburgh.
A lot of the people hate the truth but Samis has never lied he does his homework before he speaks. If he should make an error he will admit it,
So whomever he supported last year or the year before has no bearing on his choice for this year.
Honesty is the best policy.

Dear 5:50
How come you didn't blame the war in Iraq on Feiner?

Anonymous said...

Dear 9:30 (and thanks, 10:03),

While we've looking at the videotape, let's not forget that I supported Francis Sheehan in his second run at Town Council (he won the third time out). So you see, I clearly have been wrong before and using red herring language "past performance is no indicator of future gains".

However, somehow I'll manage to live with the responsibility of being right until I'm proven wrong.

And opinions, like feelings, should be tolerable, in a free society.

The truly sad thing is that the results will be touted as a "clear mandate". The only thing which is clear is that nobody really cared. When less than 1 in 5 eligible voters thought it was worth her/his time to even cast a ballot, that's horrible.
Paul, 80% of 18% should send you an important signal. You were elected by less than 15% of the voters. You must be the Supervisor for 100% of the voters and all of the residents who were ineligible to vote - Please focus your next two years on real issues, not politics.

Dear Publicus,

I used to think the same way and said the same thing at Town Board meetings.

But then I got smarter. If residents don't come out and vote, don't come to Town Hall, the result of this is: that there is no and never will be a wholly accurate way to determine their happiness or unhappiness with how the town is being run, that is short of spending tax dollars on what will result in a controversial professional study/survey. Care to tack this expense onto the already besieged Comprehensive Plan.

And these studies (phone, mail, interview) would be delirious with professional joy if their sampling even neared 25% of 18% of the population, much less 80%.

Fact of life.

Makes you unhappy, get more people out to vote. I don't think you would argue that Feiner did anything to discourage voter turnout.

But all of this pales against your assumption that Feiner is not going to try to work for the benefit of all Greenburgh residents -- whether they voted or not. True, he has to make assumptions what they want and true, that he can't make everyone happy all the time but it certainly is in his best interest, even as a polictian, to make this happen.

Thus to argue mandate or mandate only works for the benefit of those who oppose the winners at the polls -- or those who lost.

Sorry, but Feiner and Co. can only go with the election results because that's all the winners have; the invocation of someone signing Publicus, although of historical note, simply does not signify if you are the 80% of the 18% or the 20% of the 82%.

And since the real Democratcs and the true Democrats are not such definitive terms anymore, it may be similarly confusing to differentiate the "real" and the true issues.

Think Bernstein is still walking around, chest out, proclaiming that the Feirer slate "Got TROUNCED in Edgemont"?

Congratulations to Paul, Sonja, Kevin and Judith.

I can say that, if I could find other elected officials as easy as I can find Paul, we will not have the problems that we have, specially with Congress.
It is time to find a better representative in congress, pro-war Lowey is not making the cut.

It is sad the participation to be so low.
Also, disconcerning is the large amount of votes that were nulified almost.
Are those machines working?

BERNSTEIN can't believe that the residents he claims to represent failed him.
All that hot air and a loss of shoe leather got him nowhere.
Bernstein have you learned anything from this election. We are fed up with you.
