Sunday, March 22nd is International World Water Day.
This day focuses attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. This year the theme for World Water Day is
"Shared Water - Shared Opportunities",
with a special focus on transboundary waters.http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/flashindex.html

In or out of a drought, every New Yorker can save hundreds of gallons of water a week by following these easy water conservation DO's & DON'Ts:

Bathroom
Do take short showers and save 5 to 7 gallons a minute.
Do fill the tub halfway and save 10 to 15 gallons.
Do install water-saving toilets, showerheads and faucet aerators. Place a plastic bottle filled with water in your toilet tank if you cant switch to a low-flow toilet.
Don't run the water while shaving, washing your hands or brushing your teeth. Faucets use 2 to 3 gallons a minute.
Don't use the toilet as a wastebasket, and don't flush it unnecessarily.
Everywhere
Do repair leaky faucets and turn taps off tightly. A slow drip wastes 15 to 20 gallons each day.
Don't open fire hydrants.
Kitchen & Laundry
Do run the dishwasher and washing machine only when full. Save even more by using the short cycle.
Do install faucet aerators.
Don't let the water run while washing dishes. Kitchen faucets use 2 to 3 gallons a minute. Filling a basin only takes 10 gallons to wash and rinse.
Don't run water to make it cold. Have it chilled in the refrigerator, ready to drink.
Outdoors
Do use a self-closing nozzle on your hose.
Don't water your sidewalk or driveway -- instead, sweep them clean.
Don't overwater your lawn or plants. Water before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m.

How about watching construction sites more carefully so that we do not have broken pipes to give home owners a dirty water problem .

Massive fines should be in place for any breakage caused by private construction companies..

When this problem occurs we are told by the water department to run the water in our bathtubs until the problem clears up.
this is an extra expense that the home owner often should have never incurred.

I too suffer form the dreaded muddy water problem that comes into my home consistently, 3 or 4 times a year each year. I've lived here for almost 19 years and it has never been fixed!

It is mud, debris and it flows into my hot water heater (replaced twice)washer, toilets, tubs and sinks before I can catch it. It has cost me substantial money in replacing clothes that have been ruined as well as my appliances.

Despite my calls to the water department, they can not find the source and they have not attempted to remedy it.

I am told to open all faucets and run the water. I am told that if my neighbors did the same, my problem at the time would dissipate more quickly. They usually send someone out to open up the hydrants and leave me a cleaning chemical to wash clothes and clean toilets and tub.

All screens from faucets must be removed and cleaned, shower heads cleaned, sinks, toilets, tubs.......... what a chore!

This problem has plagued my home and it has become a costly nuisance.
I have investigated adding a whole house water filter but was told that the amount of mud that I get will clog that as well. My current hot water heater is starting to spring another leak due to sediment and will need to be replaced again.

Save water? I wish. My water bills are far higher than they should be due this problem. In good weather I drag my garden hose to a catch basin & run it for hours on end.

It is frustrating that I must bear this costly unsanitary problem alone. I worry about the effects on my kids who I've found sitting in a tub of yuck on occasion, when the water suddenly goes mud in the middle of a bath.

I've heard that someone in Edgemont has this problem and that the water department has his nearby hydrants on a flush schedule.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Paul,
I know that at one time there was a hydrant flush schedule but I believe it been done away with. Can you tell me if so and why?

I will ask that the water dept contact you again early next week. Please provide me with a status report. Please e mail me your address and phone that the water dept should contact you at.

Paul, You should be advised of any problems in the town by your department heads.

The complaints are taken either by a department worker at night or the secretary of DPW.

Are these complaints shelved ???
Why is it that the public has to do the job that your town workers are getting paid .

In my area we had muddy water in February and then again this month.
If you check with yor workers you will see that compalaints are made not three times a year but every other month and sometimes once a month.
The quality of life in Greenburgh has gone to the dogs.

no raise for CSEA workers,so we will do less work let the mud flow

Anonymous said...

Well if you admit in doing less work you will not get a raise.

Will you allow the supervisor to use this against you?Could it be that the governing members have already noticed a complete slowdown by all within the jobs here in Greenburgh.
Wrong stratagy.
Show the residents that you are doing the best and maybe they will back you guys up.
I know the hell with everyone but remember two wrongs do not make a right.
The supervisor and the board are wrong in not granted you the raise due you some time ago but the more you fight the loner it will take to get one.
Don't penalize the residents because we too are at their mercy. We pay and keep paying with no accountability where our money is going.

your money is going to the Greenburgh Community Center and Fairview

Anonymous said...

So you think that you are telling us something that we don't know.
Paul and the rest of the board need these people to get reelected again. If they only knew how they are getting played.
They must think that the joke is on theose that support the center in Fairview but they should remember he who laughs last laughs best.

MR. Leavy
Have you call a plumber to check and scan your water intake pipe lane?
You need to make sure you home intake is not broken at the joint of the town line.
You will notice if it is your house line when the pressure is lower in your house and not your neighbor's.
You should get it tested.
It looks as if your house line is broken and is taking ground debris into your home line.
If the town line is broken you will have a permanent puddle of water from the street line to your home.
Do you have a street leak in front of your house?
If not, it is your in ground house line.
Eventually, if you do not get if scanned and fix, a bigger piece of debris will clog your line and you will have a serious bill.

Houses with additions sometimes have connecting intake pipes added and joined in ground and when the new section settles, a crack might open at the neck and allow debris to be sucked in.

Town staff continue to do a great job. They are dedicated. Many appreciate the fact that there have been no layoffs.

Anonymous said...

paul i dare you lay some one off

Anonymous said...

6:44 LAYOFFS! the town is still hiring people!

Anonymous said...

The positions being hired are essential. The comptroller, for example, insisted on hiring a payroll clerk and indicated to the town board that if he was not able to hire that individual that some internal controls could not be implemented.

Anonymous said...

So let me get this straight. There is a hiring freeze in the Town unless it's essential. WOW!!!!!!!!!!! And I thought all CSEA workers were non-essential. Comes back to bite you in the butt, doesn't Mikey. I guess you meant all CSEA workers except in your Department.

Anonymous said...

Correction - Comes back to bite you in the butt, doesn't it Mikey.

This is response to the CSEA employee who stated that since there was no raise, there will be less work done, let the mud flow. I am not getting a raise on my job either. I continue to do my job as completely and conscientiously as I have always done it. My taxes are being raised by over 7% and my services are being cut in Greenburgh. If you dislike your job so much why don't you quit and someone else would be happy to take your job - a job with full benefits and a decent wage.

I never said I dislike my job,but
someone else can have it next year because I will be collecting a fat pension

Anonymous said...

Are you sure that you will be able to collect a pension.
You are counting your chickens before they hatch.
Maybe the method used for you not to get a raise will also exist when pension time comes arround.

Anonymous said...

Wow really nice 8:14, you make all CSEA employees look like typical civil service employees with your comment of doing less, then to add to it you respond that you will be collecting a "fat pension."
Well Taxpayers all of us do not have this same mind set, and are thankful that we have a job regardless of not getting a raise, and we are not all as arrogant and selfish as some employees!

Anonymous said...

Now that the issue of civil service employee has been raised.

The county heard at the Texas best bull and sire festival, of the multi-million dollar bull and sire.
The influential breeders demanded the two to be bought with taxpayers monies, to provide a service to the community by such active animals. The breeders intent was to create enough specimens and profit by paying a small fee to the county for the animal's "services."
After a month in the county care the bull and sire failed to impregnate a single mate. The breeders fumed!!! The county called the rancher who sold the animals at golden prices.
The rancher arrived to the county barns, whisper something to the ears of both animal and in unison both animals answered: "now, we are civil servants, go .....yourself"

This time the public will be fighting with Kolesar to get the town back on tract.

Was a stupid mistake to fire him just when he was going to tell you and the town board as to what was wrong with the way this illustrious town was being run.

I guess you did not want to hear the truth or has there been a magnitude of coverups .

He was the best thing to happen here in Greenburgh.
Yes his mannerism of speaking was a little bit rough but he was and is as honest as one can be under the the circumstances of trying to make this town an up front way of doing business.
Too much has been pushed aside to make certain individuals look good.

Take the work session that guy brought out points concerning the sewer districts that will impact almost all the residents of Greenburgh and what happened there=== the town attorney tried to say that laws that were established before the sewers were put in place may be illegal.
Does he know more than what the men in charge knew at that time.
NO.
Paul are the methods that you and the board implimented legal.
One can say by looking back at the way you handled business that your decisions were illegal too.According to your legal advisor you cannot trust anyone .

The letter that was written by Tolchin did lay out a plan concerning the sewers. What was so illegal about that.
Did she not receive the detailed notes from the DPW commish at that time together with the supervisor and above all the town board.

These are things that would have been presented by the fired comptroller because there is no internal control here in Greenburgh .
Everyone did what they wanted and let the next guy worry about it.

The sewer guy stood his ground and by all means did show the town attorney that his method of doing things did not satisfy his long investigation into the sewer problems that is facing almost all the residents od Greenburgh.

You can take the information back to whomever but this problem has to be investigated to the fullest by the state.
You are including illegal fees on our taxes again again .
Maybe we as residents can initiate a legal suit agains the town for charging us monies when we should indeed get back monies.
Thge cats out of the bag so think about it.
Kolesar did a great job you and the board made a great blunder in letting him go, that acording to the Inquirer, will cost the taxpayer, multi bucks in an upcoming lawsuit. You did receive some bad legal advice,,,,What ese is new,,,,,,,,,

ok, let's see how long b/f 10:36 gets deleted.
